King's Watch Tower: Bantayan sa Hari

INTRODUCTION

"Built around the early 1800′s, the watch tower served to protect the locality from marauders from the seas.”

HISTORY

The Bantayan sa Hari (Kings Moro watch tower or baluarte) is a historic relic that figures prominently in the seal of the city of Mandaue. This is a watch tower where the guards of the rulers of Cebu kept watch on the pirates approaching the city, particularly when the Moro raiders begun concentrating their attacks on the towns of northern Cebu after Fray Julian Bermejo's effective blockade and defense of the south. A bell in the tower kept the villagers informed about any such danger as they would then take refuge in the Patriarch church of Saint Joseph.
